Thoughtful Alzheimer’s & Dementia Care at Home
Caring for someone living with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia often requires more than occasional help. In 2020, approximately 230,000 people in Illinois over age 65 lived with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia. Experts project this number will reach 260,000 by 2025.
Our dementia care & Alzheimer’s care services focus on daily structure, safety, and personal comfort in the home. We shape care around routines and can assist with things like personal care services, medication reminders, meal preparation, mobility assistance, and supervision.

The Hidden Safety Challenges of Alzheimer’s and Dementia
Alzheimer’s disease and dementia affect judgment, memory, and awareness. Without steady support, individuals may face a higher risk of falls, medication errors, dehydration, malnutrition, or isolation. Behavioral changes can also threaten household safety.
The Main Types of Alzheimer’s and Dementia
Dementia describes a group of conditions that affect memory, reasoning, and behavior. Alzheimer’s disease remains the most common form, but several others exist.
Common types of dementia include:
Alzheimer’s disease, linked to progressive memory loss
Vascular dementia, often connected to stroke or circulation issues
Lewy body dementia, affecting cognition and movement
Frontotemporal dementia, impacting personality and language
While there’s currently not a cure, structured dementia and Alzheimer’s care supports daily functioning and quality of life throughout different stages.
Common Causes Behind Alzheimer’s and Dementia Conditions
Alzheimer’s and dementia develop due to a combination of biological, genetic, and health-related factors. Everyone has a different experience, but several influences are commonly linked to cognitive decline.
Contributing factors may include:
Aging-related changes in brain structure
Genetic predisposition and family history
Cardiovascular conditions affecting blood flow to the brain
Prior strokes or head injuries
Neurological changes over time
Age, genetics, cardiovascular health, and neurological factors all play a role.
When Alzheimer’s and Dementia Create Real Risks at Home
Alzheimer’s disease and dementia gradually change memory, judgment, and awareness. As these changes progress, everyday situations that once felt routine can create real safety concerns at home.
Main dangers linked to Alzheimer’s and dementia include:
Falls caused by poor balance, depth perception issues, or confusion
Missed, doubled, or incorrect medications
Dehydration and malnutrition due to forgotten meals or limited appetite
Wandering, getting lost, or unsafe exits from the home
Household accidents involving stoves, appliances, or sharp objects
Social withdrawal, anxiety, and depression tied to isolation
Behavioral changes can also increase agitation or impulsive actions, potentially placing both the individual and family members at risk without consistent support.

Bathing, grooming, and dressing
Toileting and hygiene routines
Mobility assistance and safe transfers
Reliable personal care helps preserve comfort, dignity, and daily structure.
Skilled Nursing Oversight
Skilled nursing support focuses on monitoring Alzheimer’s and dementia progression. Nurses observe cognitive changes, medication effects, safety concerns, and overall health status, while coordinating with physicians as needed.
Caregiver Support at Home
Caregivers assist with personal care tasks such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and daily routines. This support helps individuals remain safe and comfortable at home while preserving dignity and providing steady day-to-day assistance.
Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy supports daily function by addressing routine tasks, home safety, and adaptive strategies. Therapy may focus on maintaining independence with self-care, household activities, and familiar habits.
Speech & Language Therapy
Cognitive decline can affect communication and swallowing. Speech therapy helps address changes in speech clarity, comprehension, and safe eating practices as Alzheimer’s or dementia progresses.
Medication Management Support
Medication routines can become inconsistent with memory changes. Support includes reminders, observation for missed doses, and coordination with family members and providers to ensure medications are taken safely.
Medical Social Work
Medical social workers help families access community resources, support programs, and long-term care planning tools. This service supports both the individual and family members managing ongoing care needs.
Emotional Support and Companionship
Emotional support plays a meaningful role in daily life. Caregivers provide companionship, reassurance, and structured interaction to reduce anxiety, isolation, and distress.
Through Alzheimer’s in-home care services, APEX Health Services supports daily life in a way that respects the person, the household, and the evolving nature of dementia-related conditions.

Our Alzheimer’s & Dementia Care Process
Starting the Care Conversation
Care begins with a detailed intake that reviews physician information, current symptoms, daily routines, and safety concerns. The goal of this step is to align dementia and Alzheimer’s care with the individual’s cognitive stage, physical needs, and living environment. Family input plays a key role in shaping expectations and priorities.
Reviewing Coverage and Costs
Before we start care, we review available coverage options, including Medicare eligibility, state-supported programs, and private pay arrangements. Families receive a clear explanation of what services may be covered and what costs to expect.
Building a Care Plan for Home Life
We then complete an in-home assessment to shape a practical care plan focused on personal care, safety, routines, and supervision. The plan adapts over time as needs change, helping individuals remain in their own homes while receiving consistent Alzheimer’s and dementia in-home care.
Coverage & Cost Options for Alzheimer’s and Dementia In-Home Care
In-home care coverage for Alzheimer’s and dementia depends on the type of services provided. Medicare may cover skilled home health care when eligibility requirements are met, but it doesn’t typically pay for ongoing personal care or supervision.
Non-medical dementia and Alzheimer’s in-home care is usually private pay, though some individuals qualify for assistance through programs administered by the Illinois Department of Human Services or the Illinois Department on Aging. Long-term care insurance may also help reduce out-of-pocket costs. For education and local Chicago-area resources, many families turn to the Alzheimer's Association.

FAQ
What dementia training is required for caregivers in Illinois?
Illinois requires home care staff to complete 6 hours of dementia-specific training during their first year of employment, followed by 3 hours of additional training each year. APEX Health Services follows all state requirements. While we don’t present ourselves as a certified dementia program, our Private Duty Executive Director holds the Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP) credential, supporting staff education and care oversight.
Are Alzheimer’s and dementia in-home care services medical or non-medical?
Most dementia and Alzheimer’s in-home care focuses on non-medical personal care services, supervision, and daily support. Skilled medical services may be provided separately when ordered by a physician and covered under home health benefits.
Can dementia care really work in-home?
For many individuals, receiving Alzheimer’s care at home helps preserve routines, reduce confusion, and support emotional well-being. Familiar surroundings often contribute to steadier days and smoother transitions as care needs change.
How do families know when to start in-home care?
Families often consider care when memory loss affects safety, hygiene, medication routines, or daily decision-making. Starting support earlier can reduce stress for family members and help maintain balance at home.
